Handy Hints
Create a Splash.
A water feature creates a magical place, where one is relaxed and removed from the day-to-day mayhem. A trickle from the
bubbling urn or splash from a sheer water creates a tranquil setting where one can escape and revive the senses. The water
feature is usually the center point of most gardens and will express the style and elegance of its surrounds.
The water element can be only be one small part of a feature area. Many other materials are used in conjunction so that large
pumps, base ponds and structural constructions are not always needed.
Natural products are a great way of setting up the feature area, bamboo, slate, granite, sandstone, pebbles, timber and man
made items such as urns, stack stone, tiles, rope and concrete.
The shape of the feature will be dictated by the formality and size of the garden. Formal gardens will call for a geometric
shape, usually rectangle or square. Less formal gardens will require a more irregular shape and maybe at ground level to give
it a more natural look. Pebbles, bamboo and mass planting work well with the natural look where as urns, square pavers and
rendered walls work well in a formal setting.
Lighting is one sure way to enhance any garden especially when used with a water feature. Submersible lights can be installed
at the bottom of a pond shining back up towards the water surface throwing a ripple across nearby trees or backing walls. Up
lights and stainless steel bollards are the perfect way to brighten the garden beds. Plants come to life and glow as the
garden moves into a twilight wonderland that soothes the spirit.
Plant selection and placement are the key to achieving years of enjoyment. Many aspects will need to be considered before
purchasing plants,
- Shape and size of the garden
- Amount of light
- Amount of water available
- Type of wind protection
- Maintenance required
- Soil type
A theme is usually followed with most gardens, maybe a tropical look or Japanese style. What ever the theme color, texture,
shape and size will be very important. Plants with large glossy foliage will work with a tropical look while strappy bright
foliage plants sit nicely in a Japanese style garden. Trees maybe needed to screen out timber fences or to section off different
outdoor rooms. Patios may require some shade through the warmer months. Plants are used to create focal points and compliment
water features and statues.
It is worth considering local plants, as most nurseries will grow plants best suited to local conditions. If a plant is not
situated in a likable environment it may be a battle to keep it in going, a plant suited to its environment is less work for
you and a produces more rewarding result.
Tip: When buying plants watch out for roots growing through the bottom of the pot they may not take easy when you get them home.
